Beautiful But Not Meant for Everyday Use: Understanding Raku Pottery
Raku pottery is known for its stunning crackles, metallic accents, and unique smoky finishes. However, this distinctive look comes from a special firing process that creates beautiful pieces best suited for display rather than everyday use.
Here's why:
- Lower Firing Temperatures: Unlike traditional pottery fired at high temperatures to create a watertight seal, Raku pottery uses a rapid, low-heat technique. This beautiful process leaves the clay body slightly porous. While this enhances the visual aesthetic, it means the pot cannot hold liquids and isn't considered food safe.
- Water Permeability: Due to the porous nature of Raku pottery, it's not recommended for use as a vase. Water can seep through the clay, potentially damaging the piece and staining surfaces.
- Weather Limitations: The rapid temperature changes Raku pottery undergoes can make it susceptible to cracking in freezing temperatures. So, while these pots add a decorative touch indoors, they're not ideal for outdoor planters.
Great for Display:
Raku pottery's unique characteristics make it perfect for showcasing decorative items, holding dried flowers, or creating a one-of-a-kind centerpiece.
Caring for Your Pottery:
To keep your pieces looking their best, here's a quick guide on washing and handling:
Raku Pottery:
These unique pieces, with their special firing techniques, require a gentler touch. Handwashing is recommended to ensure their longevity. Avoid dishwashers altogether.
Simple Handwashing:
- Use warm, soapy water and a soft sponge.
- Avoid abrasive scrubbers that might scratch the glaze.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely with a clean tea towel.
Microwave Safety:
While some pottery can be microwave-safe, it's generally not recommended for handmade pieces. Heat distribution can be uneven, potentially causing cracks or damage.
Remember: When in doubt, handwashing is always the safest way to care for your treasured pottery creations.
